I do websites occastionally. They're not bad... pretty good, I'd say, but that's another question for another day.

In my past couple of years of doing websites I have never actually had to register a domain. The website I do for the boat used to be done by somebody who (I assumed) had a clue. I posted my website to my own personal webspace and the domain name directed the viewer there.

So now the domain name has expired and the person who (I assumed) had a clue has disappeared.

I'm surfing around the gazillion packages and I'm completely confused.

Can somebody tell me what I'm looking for here?

Ideally, what I want is a package that will give me a domain name, give me a bunch of email addresses (currently we have email addresses that are re-directed to our own personal email addresses - like my Hotmail account, for example) and it would be nice if I could actually FTP the files to the same people who are providing my domain, rather than leaving them on my own personal webspace. Also, the captain has another website - so ideally the company should be able to give us two domain names.

He was looking at this: http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/MsHostingHome;jsessionid=26801E880AEAF0D43BEF4999E3118CB8.TC63a?__frame=_top
for $4.99 per month plus an extra $5.99/year for the second domain.

But I'm completely in the dark about things like this.

Any advice, explanations, help, suggestions, whatever, would be more than greatly appreciated.

I've been looking for some web space myself (mainly at www.dreamhost.com and www.godaddy.com). I don't know if the MSHost thing is a good deal (I'm too tired to check it out now) but I know of a couple of things you'll want to look at.

Look for what the bandwidth is as well as how much space they give you. Are you going to be posting pictures? They take up a lot of space, and if you want people to see them you'll need a decent bandwidth. Some hosting sites will cut off access if you go over your bandwidth.

You don't have to register your domain with the company that hosts it - but some companies will charge you a transfer fee (though they may call it something else) if you register a domain with them but host it with someone else.

I'll think of more stuff tomorrow. Tired now, going to bed. Goodnight.

hmmm. i'm a bit clueless here, i'm afraid. you could email my web-maven friend kelly at kelly@pinktaffy.com and she might be able to shed some light on your problem.
mine (fyremaven.com) is a simple domain name i pay for (something like $40/2 years) and then i have a hosting site (warped.com) for $5/month. i'm just not exactly sure what i get for all that.
eh.
sorry!
