Last night my dad posted this on facebook:

I hate stupid people.
No, let me take that back. I hate ignorance.
I responded to his post: "Can't it be both?"
He then responded: "It can be Happy Schmidlap Day if you so desire but for me as a Christian it happens to be Christmas and Christmas came before the holiday and so I choose Merry Christmas."
Which, to be clear, is fine. Please, choose Christmas. But that's not what your picture said. Your picture said "It's not Happy Holidays, it's Merry Christmas"
I bit my tongue and said "Your page, your rules! Merry Christmas"
When what I really wanted to do was beat him over the head with a yule log.
And to be crystal clear, the holiday actually came before Christmas.

Date: 2014-11-19 03:43 pm (UTC)The second thing that annoyed the snot out of me was the number of "likes" his "I am Christian so I celebrate Christmas" comment got.
To be clear, he's married to an United Minister in the Southern US, and I am truly happy if those are their beliefs, not to mention I will support their ability to hold those beliefs, even if they aren't mine, but daaaaaaamn. I hate when ignorance is only a chromosome away.

Date: 2014-11-19 08:29 pm (UTC)I celebrate Christmas!
I am not a Christian. But to be clear. Rudolph isn't exactly front and centre with the manger animals in the New Testament, nor did the three wise men have to put chains on their camels or pack bags of traction salt to get them through the snow banks to get to grandma's house for punkin pie.
Christmas is what I call the season I celebrate. It's the holidays. Christmas and New Years. It's a time to think about being a child and waiting for Santa Claus. It's a time to take more than a second thought to the needy (though to be clear, that should happen year round.) It's a time for peace and love and happy (and booze and food!)
I'd love to hear more about Agnostica, and if you were in a position to invite me to an Agnostica feast I would totally go and bring whatever is appropriate. Hooray for your belief in a totally made up holiday!
For me at the end of the day, as long as you're not physically or emotionally blowing somebody up who doesn't believe in what you believe in, I'm all for you doing whatever floats your boat. And if you invite me openly to be a part of it, without discrediting my own parade, I am soooooo there!
As soon as you tell me I'm wrong, however...
Well, we're not friends anymore and I am totally not letting you play with my Chatty Cathy doll I have asked Santa to get me for Christmas this year.
I've been good... really!

I'm glad there were no yule logs available nearby. :D

Date: 2014-12-05 10:48 am (UTC)I actually like Happy Holidays! It encompasses Christmas, New Years, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, and maybe even the Chinese New Year!
