Spent the weekend doing the East Bay Regatta in Cape Breton. Ho-lee-jeeze. I don't know if you're familiar with Cape Breton or not, but damn, it's a pretty place. And before I get into the sailing, let me tell you a little bit about this regatta.

This regatta has been going on for 25ish years. It's run by this guy and his wife at their.... COTTAGE! They own a couple of acres on the Bras D'or lakes. And so this guy and his wife, every year, host this regatta. They open their home up to roughly about, I'd say, maybe 300-400 people. Strangers most, I assume, because I didn't know them, and I'm guessing there were many there who didn't either. They rent a bunch of tents, have live music, breakfasts and bbq's and... FREE BOOZE! (Not that that's a big deal to me, but can you imagine for a second providing free booze to 300 sailors????) Actually, it wasn't exactly free, the entrance fee per person was $25, but that covered everything. The entertainment, your meals, the race fee, everything. $25 gave you a bunch of tickets that you turned in for meals or drinks. Except nobody ever collected the tickets...

Just to give you an idea of the hospitality, I was looking for some water and asked the guy at the bar tent if he had any and he takes me INTO the cottage, goes INTO the cupboard to find a glass to get me some water. At a regatta. And it was a real regatta. With prizes and tetrahedrons and start lines and a race committee and everything. I am boggled. I am boggled that somebody would just go HEY ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO, COME ON OVER TO MY PLACE, HAVE FREE RUN OF MY COTTAGE AND LAND AND LET'S HAVE FUN FOR A WEEKEND. I'm sorry, what's stopping people from trashing your home, stealing your stuff, puking on your bed... Boggled, am I.

We set up a couple of tents as well as sleeping on the boat. I didn't bother to bring my camera this time - though I wish I would have. I wasn't expecting to have a good time, for some reason, partly of which is the fact it's about a 5 hour drive from here, but I had a blast. And we came in first for the Bacardi Cup and second for the Chrysler Trophy, so not a bad weekend.

Sailing stuff in the next post because I'm going to get interrupted, Dance Me Loose 5 From left to right.... Pete, the guy who was sick and wasn't going to go to St. Pierre but ended up going anyway. He's a DOLL. Richard. (not mine) He sails in Chester and we picked him up because we were a little short handed. Steve, he lives in Ottawa and flys in a couple of times a year to do this kind of stuff. He's a doll too. Thom, 'nuff said. Some chick who didn't get to the retail booth in time to buy a hat before they were sold out. (In the front now) Shane and Carl. (Carl's nice enough but he talks too much) There are a couple more pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dancemeloose/sets/72157594219296112/

you guys really had a blast, didnt you? but i didnt see YOU drinking out of the winning cup, what happened?

i think i have to agree with you about the whole cottage thing. it shows an amazing amount of trust (or stupidity...but i'm not judging!) to let so many strangers stay at your place. especially when the liquor is flowing. we all know people do weird stuff when they are smashed.

i'll be Thom had fun, unlimited booze!
:D
