I Love Lucy
Aug. 4th, 2003 04:38 pmBroke down and bought a new pup today. We'll be able to pick her up next weekend. The house was just too lonely without a dog.

Part of me feels guilty as heck getting another dog so soon, but it's really hard trying to adjust to life without a dog. This one was in the paper - just "CKC registered golden labs" and a number. On a whim I called to find out where they were. They're in Amherst, about a 2 hour drive away from my home, but coincidentally Richard was actually about half an hour away from Amherst when I called, and would have to be driving through Amherst on his way home. (I take this as a sign, as neither of us go anywhere NEAR Amherst on a regular basis). He stopped in and fell in love with them, and I drove up today to put a down payment on one.
It goes against my hopes of being able to rescue one from a shelter, but I really wanted a retriever and there hasn't been any retrievers at the shelters. The retriever rescue foundation's requirements for adopting one of their dogs are more stringent than adopting a child and we don't meet their guidelines. (For one, we have a child under the age of 8, for another we don't have a fenced yard, and just walking a dog is a no-no) Oh well, it's too bad, as we would have provided a really good, loving home to any dog.
We met Lucy's (we named her Lucy) parents and grandmother and they were all really nice, healthy and affectionate dogs. The breeder seemed knowledgeable and friendly enough, tho a bit of no nonsense, which I guess is probably good - he wasn't a used car salesman. I did some temperament type tests on her (such as laying her on her back and holding her down - if she's at all dominant she won't put up with it) and she passed them all with big eyed flying colours.
