A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

My best friend's dad was (probably still is) a hunter. He raised his family around guns and in support of hunting.

(I'm not anti-hunting, but I couldn't do it myself.)

He took all us children out one day to go hunting and for some ungodly reason actually gave us all guns. To be clear, I may have been somewhere between the ages of 10 and 15. Maybe. My family doesn't hunt and I have never handled a gun before. (And interestingly it's only now that I have thought about it enough to question the wisdom of it.)

I got paired off with his son, who was about the same age as I am, and my best friend's dad went off with my best friend. Sort of a "you go around this way and I'll go around that way and whoever shoots the first deer is the winner" kind of thing.

I sat in the snow with the son, both of us with guns, looked him squarely in the eye as I pointed the barrel at him and said, "If you shoot a deer, I'm shooting you."

And then we all went home.
