My kid made the highschool volleyball team. (This says something, because there was some STIFF competition.) This has helped my stress level somewhat.

I, however, am still having anxiety attacks. My computer is still redirecting me to dumb assed websites when I google shit and I still have 111 items in my inbox I need to deal with.

Mutha fuka.

It might mean I really do need booze.

WRT your computer, do you have an external hard drive? What's on that computer that is absolutely necessary? Do you have access to discs (or do you have friends who have access) which will let you reformat it?

(Also: Go kid!)

It might be worth investigating office supply places (There's a Staples in Halifax, right?) and seeing how much they charge for a backup/scrub and reformat, too. Once it's reformatted, if you go with a decent virus program, it can and scrub your backup files for you.

I have an external hard drive and two spare internal hard drives (actual drives, not partitions). On one internal one I keep random stupid media downloads (movies, recorded tv and such) that I don't give a rats ass about, and on the other internal, and the external, I do alternating backups. (Overkill perhaps, but if you have the hardware, why not!)

I also now have discs.

I just really really really really really hate reformatting and trying to remember all the stupid passwords and which software I downloaded to take care of what problem (codecs for example) and find all the stupid drivers.

Because obviously, the way I'm doing it now is much easier and quicker. (not)

Yeah, I can do it. I've done it before and I'll do it again. I'm probably not as fast as the guys in Staples, but I'm a darn sight cheaper, and quite honestly, I like doing it - I like the dabbling - but that doesn't mean I want to. :)

(What I'm saying is, anxiety sucks, and sometimes it helps to know that there are options about things that are exacerbating it. *love*)

I hear you about not wanting to have to! The thing about Staples is I think they have a guarantee, so if it needs doing again and doesn't work, it's free.

Awww you know what, you're right. :) Thanks for that.

I think giving over my baby to somebody else to operate on might make me more anxious though. Nobody can do anything nearly as good as I can...

Hmmm....

I think there's a lesson in there somewhere, don't you? :)

Reformatting is indeed a giant pain in the ass. My concern is that your backups may also have the virus; did you reload from them after you fixed things the first time?

Hmm.. good point.

My backups are pretty much strictly media or office document files and at least one of them hasn't been backed up since all this happened, so I am fairly... er... kind of.. confident that at least one of them isn't affected... er... ok, maybe not. You raise a very valid point that hadn't entered my mind. I will remember that if it gets to the point that I'm going to reload any of my shite that I do so with great caution.

In the meantime I have been running a number of different anti-malware programs on all of my drives and the first couple I ran only found shit on the C drive, so that could be a good sign.

I'm not giving up yet, I have yet to see the virus that beats me. It's usually only a full processor meltdown that makes me redo everything. (Obviously not the best way to go for optimal processing speed on an ongoing basis but I'm lazy!)

Thanks though. I know you keep offering wonderful suggestions and I keep telling you why they can't work or why I don't need them. Not very gracious of me, is it. I do appreciate the feedback though. It's nice to know somebody's listening.

xoxo

No worries! You know your computer and your abilities and resources better than I do, so I'm just trying to think of things that'll give you options and potentially more resources. <3

If you decide to install a different antivirus than the one you've been using, I strongly recommend doing so before hooking up any backup drives, and then doing the backup drives individually. That'll give you a bit more control - it'll take longer, but I think it's worth it, and if one of your backup drives IS infected, it might help to narrow down which one.

Booze may not be the answer, but it'll do until the answer comes along.
