So... a little back story. The Kid has been ill. She had strep throat last week, which progressed to scarlet fever. S'all fine now, a little antibiotics has taken care of it. She was, however, supposed to go to a Tae Kwon Do tournament over the weekend and she was supposed to have a friend over, both of which got ki-boshed. Needless to say, she was feeling rather under the weather on Saturday, physically and mentally.

So we bought her a bunny.

Now, let me say, before animal lovers amongst you start shaking your fists at me, she's wanted a bunny for a long long time. She's proven herself with the hamster, keeping it clean and fed and taken care of. She's the picture of responsibility. We'd talked about getting her one for a grading present. On Thursday, when she was diagnosed with strep throat, we stopped into the school to pick up her report card and she had all A's. So we decided to bump up the purchase of said bunny a couple of months.

So the bunny. It's an adorable little white thing with brown ears and brown and darker grey/brown spots that kind of form a line down her back and congregate on her fat behind. She's a mini rex, which is supposed to stay relatively small. Her name is Lola.

When we brought her home we noticed she was sneezing occasionally. We assumed this was a normal thing for rabbits to do. But she had a bit of a runny nose and when I googled "rabbits, runny noses and sneezing" I discovered that rabbits can get a thing called Snuffles that can be, depending on what website you look at, nothing at all, or fatal. Ugh.

So, being the softy that I am, I made an appt with the vet.

Yesterday evening we took Lola into the vet's office. It was a slow evening and the Vet was sitting at the desk with the receptionist. The receptionist asked us how old Lola was. We told her three months. The vet looked over the desk at Lola and said. "Six months". She asked us what kind of rabbit it was. We said Rex. The vet agreed with us. She asked us if it were a boy or a girl. We said girl. The vet kind of raised an eyebrow and said "We'll see about that"

So we took Lola into the examining room and the vet picked her up, rolled her over and said....

"There's a testicle"

Lola, herself, is really quite healthy. The vet said that she may have a mild case of snuffles, but that he thought that she should be able to overcome it herself. Other than that, she's a very nice specimen of rabbit.

So. Now.

What to call him?

The name Stew Stu was tossed around a bit. I still personally really like the name Stu, but I've been vetoed. The Kid was actually quite upset. Not that she wanted a girl bunny over a boy bunny, but more like she had a persona built up for Lola and was having a hard time getting her head around the fact that it wasn't accurate.

Until...

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
but I know what I am and what I am is a man
And so is Lola
L-o-l-a Lola"

He's keeping the name Lola.

:D :D

Oh Yes!!!!!
How old is "The Kid"? Hope she appreciates the joke.
So is Lola going to be an indoors bunny?

Male bunnies can be aggressive though neutering can solve that.

The kid is 11 going on 30, and yes, she agreed whole heartedly to leave his name Lola when I reminded her of the lyrics to the song.

Lola will be an indoors bunny and the vet told us about the agressiveness, but he also says that if he should become so, it is fairly reversable with neutering, so we don't have to do it just yet (as he's more of a snuggle bunny than anything else right now) but we'll keep it as an option in the future.

i mean, i'm hardly the most sane person when it comes to naming things. you know i have a big green parrot named "Kitty." a cat named "Velvet" and a dog named "River." to me a rabbit named "Lola" (no matter what the sex) seems sort of tame.

:D

nice of you to get the kid a bunny, btw. you are a very good mommie.
