What are the chances?
Sep. 3rd, 2006 03:50 pmSo, I've spent some time in the back yard today and yesterday. There's a thicket of blackberry brambles in my back yard that are positively LADEN with berries. I went out last night and picked about a cup full of them, and decided to go out again today to pick some more. After about 15 minutes of trying to pick them I realized that I wasn't dealing with your ordinary everyday average genus of black berry, but rather, I was dealing with Canus Bigus-assedus Thornius Black-Berrius, a rare breed of blackberry that actually looks innocent enough but attacks any possible intruder with invisible 18 inch spikes of something equivalent to a titanium/dacron blend. So, deciding that my shorts and t-shirt were just not cutting it when it came to defenses, I popped in the house and donned jeans and a jacket (unfortunately my chain-mail was at the cleaners, as I feel it would be much more appropriate) caught the tail end of a very enjoyable IM conversation that wasn't meant for me, and returned to the bush to whack blackberries.
Returning inside with my prey finally vanquished (Do you think a taxidermist would stuff and mount a blackberry for me if i asked him?) I went to Epicurious to see just what exactly, besides eat, I could do with the little devils. I debated mixing them with some apples from the apple trees that grow next to the blackberry bushes, but they're a bit worse for wear. The only other fruit I have in the house right now are some nectarines. God knows there are enough blackberry-nectarine recipies out there to choke a horse. (And I'm not anywhere near experimental enough to try to do something "fun and unplanned" with them) But there it was. An honest to god nectarine and blackberry cobbler recipie. And not only that, I have every ingredient needed to make it. The chances of this are one in a million. The chances that it will taste ok are about 1 in 10 million. I can't cook to save my soul. But I'm gonna give it a try.
