A fun story for a change
Aug. 28th, 2014 10:53 amSo, I'm a bit of a freak, but if you have been with me any length of time you know that's not necessarily a bad thing.
One thing I typically am not, is any kind of fan-gurrrrl. I get passionate and emotional about a lot of things, and I watch, and will profess to love, a couple of TV shows, but passionate and emotional about tv, nah not me. Don't get me wrong, I'll be the first to hold my breath for the season premier for Game of Thrones and I'm still, for some stupid reason, watching every episode of Grey's Anatomy even though it lost its attraction for me about 5 seasons ago. But I'm not writing fan-fic and I don't have a John Snow pillow case. (Though I'd never look down on anybody who would.)
Back story: In the morning, when I'm getting ready for work, I have my iPad open to Netflix and I typically pick a series, start at the beginning and work through it. I've gone through all episodes of Dexter and House and have watched a couple of seasons of Mayday. About a month ago I started watching Haven. It's a show based on a Stephen King story, set in Maine, and it's filmed locally - in the community where I race, actually, and areas around it. I started watching it mostly because I got a real kick out of seeing a boathouse in Chester used as the Harbour Master's station or a restaurant that I have frequented standing in as the local pub. They even use the yacht club occasionally as, well, a yacht club. The acting probably won't win any awards and the subject matter is definitely for a niche market, but I've been enjoying it.
Anyway, the story. (Boy I'm bad at getting to a point, aren't I?)
My dad is in town and when we were kids we used to spend a lot of summers on the South Shore. On Monday Dad and I packed up the car and took a drive to Lunenburg, stopped for some Fish and Chips, then took the old highway back along the coast. Along the way I told him about this show I'd been watching and pointed out the "local landmarks" based on the show. We pulled into Chester and decided to stop for an ice cream. I know Chester like the back of my hand. I have been there every weekend from May to September for the past 15 years. My dad insisted that there was an ice cream shop down a road to the right, and I took the road, not being particularly familiar with that particular road. As I turned down the road a police car started following me. Now this road was a one lane back road and I'm thinking, why on earth is a police car following me? It continues to follow me as I turn into the Chester curling rink. I am SO SCREWED, I think. But wait, that's not an RCMP car... and I'm pretty sure Chester's not big enough to have their own Police force. Odd. I drive around the parking lot of the Chester curling rink and as I drive I see a man carrying a uniform with a US flag on the shoulder. To be clear, I'm in Nova Scotia, which the last time I looked is part of Canada. Why is there a US police officer in... OH MY GOD I HAVE JUST DRIVEN ON TO THE HAVEN LOCATION!! AND THE COP CAR FOLLOWING ME IS A HAVEN POLICE CAR!!! AND THERE ARE ALL THE ACTORS' TRAILERS!! AND THERE'S ONE OF THE ACTORS!! (Though to be clear, he's in season 3 forward and I'm still in season 1, however if I were caught up I'd totally know who he was!!)
Yup, I totally fan-gurrrled. And to be crystal clear, I am totally going back to the curling club when I'm in Chester again on Monday.
I shall keep you posted as to my success in stalking the actors.
