What a great day
Aug. 29th, 2004 08:28 amYesterday there was no racing. :( Instead, Cap'n Thom and his partner Juanita and The Kid and I went for a cruise. It was a fantastic day.
We packed a picnic lunch, put up the jib and away we went. Jess and I tacked the jib and by the last tack she was almost as fast as any grownup ***proud*** and she was loving it! Normally, what happens is Thom will say "stand by to come about" and all the crew has to shout "ready here" when they're ready. Watching The Kid shout "ready here" just cracked me up.
We went to an island with a sheltered sandy beach and no other boats. One of the guys who came to Marblehead with us came alongside and rafted up and we ate sandwiches and sardines and summer sausage and olives and fresh fruit. It was wonderful.
After we'd had our fill, The Kid and I decided to leave the "grownups" to talk on the boat and rowed the dingy to the island. On the island we made sand castles and looked for shells and I taught her how to skip stones. Her last one had to be easily an 8 skipper. ***more proud***
We motored back because the wind had died, but the sunset was one of the prettiest I'd seen in a long time, and the moon was huge. (And of course I forgot my camera) The Kid curled up on my lap in the back of the boat and, in the twilight Thom gave her the tiller and she steered most of the way home. I showed her how she should pick a light on the horizon and try to keep it in the same place compared to something on the boat and even though steering a boat with a tiller feels backwards she did a great job.
When everything was put away, Thom told her that she was welcome on the boat any time. That she was a real pleasure. ***busting proud***. Thom don't do that kind of stuff very often.
