Just Checkin' In
Jul. 14th, 2004 08:31 amVacation is swell.
North Carolina is swell.
It's so wonderfully hot. It's been between 90ish and 100ish all week. I'm lovin' it.
Friday - got here, the rest was a blur.
Sataurday - Took a boat ride and went swimming in water that was as warm as bath water and as dark as Pepsi due to (or so I've been told) the tanic acid from the cypres tree roots around the river. You couldn't see a thing when you opened your eyes and couldn't see a person once they'd dove under the water.
Sunday - went to church in the morning (gah) which didn't kill me but was worth the trip just to see this large-ish southern gentleman in a blue and white seer sucker suit (pronounced seeah suckah suit) He looked just like Boss Hogg from the Dukes of Hazzard. We went to Virginia Beach for a bit but mostly for sight seeing.
Monday morning - woke up at 5:00 to watch the bats come back from their nightly foraging to their home in my dad's roof. It was incredible. Just like a bat ballet. One, then two, then five then 20 then hundreds of bats circling around and dipping and diving. All I needed was some musical accompanyment. Monday we also went to the beach on the Outer Banks. God, it's so wonderful to be warm and to swim in water that doesn't cauuse hypothermia within 15 minutes. Monday evening we went to Suzie and David's for supper. Suzie and David are the perfect southern couple. Very propper and mannered and such. The boys were on the front step enjoying their single malt and cee-gars while the women stayed inside in the air conditioning and gossiped. It was just like a sceen from Steel Magnolias. I love the accent here. The words are like molasses coming out of people's mouths. So slow and sweet.
Yesterday we went for another boat ride in the morning through the Dismal Swamp. Very Cool. Then we all went to the YMCA for, what we planed to be, some swimming but ended up to be rock climbing insead (The Kid saw the rock climbing wall and swimming was a thing of the past.)
Today my dad has to work and Me, Dick, The Kid and my brother
fatty666 are all just going to hang out today. Maybe go to the beach, drive around Elizabeth City and see what's out there or do generally nothing. There's supposed to be some serious unsettled weather this evening. Highs and lows colliding or some such thing. Severe thunder storm warning (mind you, there's been thunder warning every day since we've got here and there's always thunder booming at some distance or another.)
Well, that's it for now. Gonna go hit the showers. Hope everybody's swell. Special hugs to
tigermorph who sounds like she needs it.
