Tired

Happy.

I was still the rookie - the new guy hasn't shown up yet, but I'm not treated like the rookie anymore. I probably wasn't treated like the rookie last year either, or maybe even the year before, but I felt rookie-ish. I don't feel rookie-ish anymore.

It was a great sail. The sun hasn't shone in Nova Scotia for, literally, at least three weeks, but it came out today. It wasn't warm enough on the water for shorts and tank tops, but for most of the time wet pants, crew shirt and long sleeved thermal undershirt were sufficient. (Yeah, stupid sport but i love it)

Had the best start. Very respectable first over the line as the gun went. We did everything but a reef during the sail. Peeled the spinnaker (which means put one up while the other one is still flying) free flew the spinnaker around a mark... hmm... Just all around fun stuff.

But mostly we laughed. And laughed and laughed and laughed. It's so good to be back. Laughed at Carl when Shane accused him of being "Family Man" (sung to the tune of Spider Man). Laughed at the fact we did everything but a peel, and then decided to do a peel. Laughing after the race when we wanted to see if we could make the boat go backwards (A very tough thing to do in a sailboat) because we just didn't want to go back to shore - it was too nice a day and we were having too much fun. Laughing during the race when the pepperoni and Rollo's got opened up during the spinnaker run. (It's Gina's buffet... i bring the pepperoni and the rollos, they bring the rum) Using the mechanical hand from Marblehead (see memories) to feed the crew rollos. Deciding to buy an island. Just laughing at stupid stuff that nobody would understand unless you're on a sailboat in the middle of Mahone Bay on the first sunny day in a month with a tumbler of rum and coke in your hand.

It's positively spiritual, believe it or not. One of the few places I feel... peaceful. Despite the fact that a 40 foot sailboat rounding a mark and popping a spinnaker is possibly the least peaceful place to be) I have bruised hip bones and knees from "my office" (I do the pit which has all the lines for putting sails up and down and correcting sail shape - cunningham, vang, outhaul, topping lift, boogerlift... (ok, that's not really a word, but I was just seeing if you're still with me) When something happens you need to be in the pit cranking something away like mad - and the pit is in line with my hip bones, and if it's a hard crank, I'm bracing myself with my knee. I love every bruise.

We got line honours, meaning we crossed the finish line first, but after corrected time we had second place. Yeah, same old story. Damn handicap.

Anyway. I'm pooped and sore. I think it's tub-bound for me and an early night, since the Age of Empires game planned for tonight seems to have fallen through.

Night all.
