Fruit Fly Madness

I don't know about the rest of the world, but Nova Scotia right now is a haven for the damn fruit fly.

Y'all remember Madame Drosophila from grade 10 biology, yes? People do lots of genetic research on the little buggers because they reproduced so damn quickly?

Well, there's a whack of them here.

I did a quick google to see what can be done about them. I came across a site that recommended putting a funnel over a jar with a piece of banana in it to attract them. Once they've been captured...

...This simple but effective trap will soon catch any remaining adult flies which can then be killed or released outdoors.

Yes. Fruit Fly Catch and Release.

It's the only humane thing to do, really, isn't it.

oh yeah

I find a bottle of deodorant and a match equally effective..

Heard on the news today that they reckon England's going to be overrun with flies if the weather keeps heating up. Dang. (And indeed heck and blast)

Maybe I'm heartless, but it seems a little bizarre to me to preserve a life that only lasts 24 hours all on its own...

Isn't it 24 hours or something unreasonably short like that?

I mean, you'd have to release them every couple of HOURS in order to preserve any QUALITY of life, wouldn't you?

Yeah--I'm heartless.
